Guest Reviews

“The Darwin Town House total refurbished is brilliant.”

This hotel is right in the Centre of Shrewsbury and everything is newly and tastefully refurbished with a Darwin theme. The welcome was warm and friendly and informative.
Our room with ensuite and Malton Brown toiletries provided and lovely fluffy white towels and the most beautiful dragonfly blinds was delightful. The bed was also so comfy with lovely white sheets and duvet.

The information in the room about Shrewsbury was very well presented in a binder with places to eat, river trips and the owner had a good supply of local information to hand. There are two lounges both very tastefully decorates along the Darwin theme with lots of books on his life as well as decorative ornaments of animals etc in each and every room, but in a very modern style.

Best of all is the newly furnished conservatory overlooking the relaxing garden, the flowers on ALL tables both inside and out added a personal caring touch to the decor which is magnificant. The girls who served the breakfast were well trained and professional and the variety of breakfast choice is different. The portions were big and different with Bagels, various egg dishes presented with water cress and a large full English was delicious.

“WHAT A FIND!!!!!🐒”

As a longstanding group of old school friends - 'in our prime' as Maggie Smith would describe our vintage - we had decided on Shrewsbury as the destination for our annual May bank holiday pilgrimage. I know the town fairly well and have been excited by its recent 'evolution' in terms of a perfect weekend destination. Steeped in history, quirky architecture, unique shops, cocktail bars and restaurants, one is spoilt for choice. Trawling through the various booking sites I came across what seemed to be a new hotel in the town centre. We were a bit confused by the info io line as there were conflicting reviews but we decided to chance our luck. What a find!! On arriving we all felt that we had won the lottery!! Tucked down a quiet, little street only yards from the beautiful river Severn is Darwin's Townhouse Hotel (formerly known as Sandford House) not only is it within walking distance of everything in the town but also right beside a huge car park!

We were lucky enough to be amongst the first guests as the owners had only just completed a 3 month renovation on this lovely old building. The whole feeling is one of absolute luxury!! Fresh, contemporary decor which nods back to the 'origins' of Darwin's voyages of discovery are complimented by genuine warmth and hospitality. 2 beautiful sitting rooms, complete with really interesting reading material, traditional board games games and even a range of drinks from which to help yourself from the 'honesty bar'!! Free, reliable wifi available throughout all areas.

Beds unbelievably comfortable. Superb bathrooms with complimentary Molton and Brown products. Breakfast in a light and spacious conservatory overlooking a sun trap 'sunken' garden which has the beginnings of a leafy, tropical plantation appearing!! We didn't want to leave!

Such a relaxing weekend!! We'll be back - soon!!! Thank you to all the wonderful staff who made us so welcome.

“New fresh owners”

Having stayed previously at this hotel I rebooked after discovering it had new owners. The hotel has changed its name and also it's attitude towards the hospitality industry. It is now clean, bright, beautifully decorated and full of quality furnishings. The hotel is close to the beautiful town centre and close to many top rated hotels and local pubs.
Ignore the previous reviews and allow the new owners to draw a line and come visit for yourselves.

Room Tip: Annex rooms overlook the garden.

We really loved staying in the garden rooms it was like being in your own apartment very comfortable and it was brilliant for our little dog to have the run of the garden which was beautifully kept we shall definitely be making a return visit also the staff were really friendly and helpful excellent breakfast could not better…

"Good value town centre B&B"

Spent a Friday night here our room was clean and comfortable and there was very little noise from the surrounding pubs and restaurants.

The location is very good for shopping eating and drinking, plus you can access the footpath that runs along the banks of the River Severn, if you decide to take a stroll along this path head towards the Welsh Bridge and enjoy the views of Shrewsbury School and take a walk through the quarry park and dingle gardens.

Breakfast was between 8:00 - 9:00 quite a narrow window by todays standards, it consisted of a selection of cereals and a freshly cooked full English or eggs scrambled, poached etc, plus plenty of toast, tea and coffee.

The owner has a direct manner but we found him to be friendly and helpful. If your looking for clean, comfortable no frills accommodation at a sensible price then this is a good option. Parking is about 50 yards away at the St Julians Friars council car park which is free between 6:00pm and 8:00am. There are a full list of charges on the Shrewsbury council website, B&B permits are also available for longer stays.

"Charming B&B very close to City Centre"

Charming B&B very close to city centre in Shrewsbury. Very friendly owner and cleaning staff are very nice too. Breakfast was very good. Had a two night stay and was perfect for walking to everything in Shrewsbury. A long stay car park is close and you pay £4 for all day. Glad I found this hotel.
